ANTI-CORRIDA CAMPAIGNING IN PERU

The politician José Urquizo Maggia and Perú Antitaurino – the Peruvian national association against bullfighting –  will hold a press conference in the Peruvian Congress on the eve of  “celebrations” for the bull festival of Señor de los Milagros – Our Lord of the Miracles –   announcing the activities planned for November in Lima and other provinces. This is a continuation of the national campaign to raise awareness about how inappropriate it is to preserve traditions which are cruel to animals, such as the bullfight, as this is not only an attack on defenceless creatures, but also on our right to live a culture of peace.

They are asking the national government to debate and pass Bill 496, aimed at the abolition of the bullfight and other forms of ill treatment of animals; in the most recent survey carried out by Datum at national level, 68 % of Peruvians are opposed to the corrida, and only 9% in favour; furthermore, according to the latest survey by the University of Lima, 73% of the people of that city are opposed to such events and only 27% in favour.
