I don’t feel like work today,said Buzz. I need a bit of a rest.

Have you ever heard the expression Busy as a bee? It obviously came about because these little creatures are always fully employed.

Well, not exactly all.

Buzz, the bee in this story, had rather different ways. To be brutally honest, she was an idle little insect. The Queen Bee, her mother, who had hundreds and hundreds of
stripey, furry children, did her best to encourage Buzz to get down to some work. more…

Let me tell you my story:

My name was Maracella. In my previous existence.

I was gently reared, daughter of a Hibernian king and descendant of Magnus Maximus, Emperor of Rome. But I can claim no special influence in my Welsh home, except that bestowed upon me by others.

Which is why I have been able to declare this peaceful land a hunting-free zone. more…

Oh no, another moccasin!

Eager Beaver looked glumly at the shoes surrounding him on the bank of the great Delaware. His friends, Bear Feet and Little Deer, had caught fish, so their parents would praise them.

Not his mother. Running Water might tell him off. As if he set out to catch moccasins deliberately! They were no good to him, because they were usually too big and never matched. more…

On Saturday, October 1st 2005, QCA was represented at the Anglican Society for the Welfare of Animals/Christian Concern for Animals service in York Minster.

This is probably my favourite of all our Gothic cathedrals, but I had not realised that, in walking through this airy, wonderful building, suffused by sun that afternoon, I could have been walking in the steps of Constantine, proclaimed Emperor on this site in 306AD. Of course, it was a Roman fortress then, but the very foundations of this Minster are closely connected to the earliest days of the Christian faith in England. more…

In the last 24 hours I have watched two DVDs, both of which made me weep.

The first one was called: Not in my Name, the result of secret filming in a slaughterhouse. more…

At HIPPO we believe that compassion is indivisible. We do not have to choose the lesser of two evils. Helping the poor and hungry people of the world to get enough to eat does not have to cause suffering to animals. Eating animal products is a major cause of the problem of world food shortage and not even a part of the solution.

Quakerism has grown from the Christian tradition and, as an advocate of non-violence, it is rightly proud of its pacifist principles. The renowned Quaker Peace Testimony, based on the principle of non-violence, is, primarily, considered a testimony against militarism and the conflict and aggression of war. It is not inclusive of the violence and deprivation inflicted upon animals.

“Thanksgiving dinner’s sad and thankless,

Christmas dinner’s dark and blue,

When you stop and try to see it

From the turkey’s point of view.

Sunday dinner isn’t sunny,

Easter feasts are just bad luck,

When you see it from the viewpoint

Of a chicken or a duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,

Pork and lobsters, lamb chops too,

Till I stopped and looked at dinner

From the dinner’s point of view.”

From Where The Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein.
