Norman Baker
Animal Experiments: an Inside View from the Home Office.
Norman Baker was Liberal Democrat MP for Lewes from 1997 until 2015. From 2013 he was the Minister of State at the Home Office with responsibility for animals in scientific research, perhaps the only declared anti-vivisectionist ever to hold that post. He argued that ending animal research would bring both moral and economic benefits to the UK. He resigned as Minister in November 2014, famously saying that being a Liberal Democrat in the Home Office was like being the only hippy at an Iron Maiden concert (his own rock band, called Reform Club, has a new album due out soon).
Norman Baker’s political memoirs, Against the Grain, are to be published in September. This talk will be a rare opportunity to hear and question this distinctive personality on the political realities of animal research, and the prospects for ending it.
The event will be chaired by Sir David Madden, former British Ambassador to Greece, now senior member of St Anthony’s College
All are welcome! The event is organised by Voice for Ethical Research at Oxford. For more information, contact mail@vero.org.uk
