This is Mali.
She is the Philippines’ only captive elephant, confined, for the past 35 years, to a very small enclosure at Manila Zoo.
Taken from her mother when only an infant, she hasn’t seen another elephant since.
We understand from PETA Asia Pacific that President Aquino has issued a directive stating that Mali’s health must be evaluated and she must be sent to a sanctuary. Mali would then have the opportunity at last to live peacefully in a sanctuary with room to roam, ponds to bathe in, fresh vegetation, foraging opportunities, and the company of many other elephants.
