Less than 24 hours after receiving an ARAN letter calling on Drogheda Borough Council to introduce a motion to ban animal-act circuses in anticipation of the upcoming arrival of ‘The Courtney Brothers Circus’, the Mayor of Drogheda Kevin Callan has contacted the group to state his support for our campaign and that he’ll introduce a motion at the next council meeting.

But he did not stop there. This morning on LMFM radio which has quite a large listenership, the Mayor spoke so eloquently about why animal-act circuses are a thing of the past and why as a society we need to move with the times and consign these archaic, Victorian forms of exploitation to an end. During the interview an ARAN spokesperson applauded his progressive views and encouraged listeners to get behind our ‘Stop Circus Suffering in Ireland’ campaign.

The response from local people in the area has being encouraging.

ARAN has offered Irish circuses our experience and support should they wish to retire their animals in order to move on from a business what is clearly coming to an end, and for good reason, thanks to public support.

Drogheda will be the third Irish town that ARAN is now working with to introduce similar motions to that of Cork and Fingal.
