GREYHOUND AWARENESS WEEK   – May 25th – 31st

Greyhound Awareness Week gives an opportunity for all those concerned about the plight of greyhounds to educate the public about the mass slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry.

Zonda

Zonda used to race under the name O’Malley’s Wonder.  She was rescued, rehabilitated and homed by Action for Greyhounds. To see her story, please view www.actionforgreyhounds.co.uk – on the section “Dogs Homed”.

With a large enough boycott by ordinary people, the industry can be brought to its knees and the suffering and untimely death of thousands of greyhounds prevented.

Over 10,000 greyhounds, bred for the British racing industry, are “put down” every year, after failing to make the grade as racers or when their “careers” on the tracks come to an end.

An RSPCA report on greyhound racing has stated that “at least 20 greyhounds a day – either puppies which do not make the track, or ‘retired’ dogs aged three or four – simply ‘disappear’, presumed killed”.

Anyone who would like to organise or take part in an event in their local area, please contact Action for Greyhounds info@actionforgreyhounds.co.uk

GRAI invites
Greyhound Compassion supporters to Walk for Greyhounds 2012

Greyhound Rescue Association Ireland (GRAI) would like to invite all Greyhound Compassion supporters and volunteers to attend Walk for Greyhounds 2012 on Sunday 17th June in Dublin, Ireland. This annual event is being held to promote retired racing greyhounds as pets and to raise awareness of the welfare issues within greyhound racing in Ireland. Acclaimed film director Lenny Abrahamson and best selling Irish musician Sharon Shannon will be taking part in the walk, alongside hundreds of other dog lovers from all over Ireland, the UK, Europe and the US.

This family day out and peaceful one hour walk through the centre of Dublin was held for the first time last year and attracted huge interest with over 250 people and 100 dogs attending the event.

This year’s event will be taking place on Sunday 17th June, at 12pm Fusilier’s Arch, St Stephens Green, Dublin.

All breeds of dogs and walkers without dogs, very welcome!

For up to date information on the event, please visit www.GRAI.ie  or contact: kathygorman@eircom.net

And from the USA:

This group works to pass greyhound protection laws and end dog racing and is the largest organization of its kind in the world. Dog racing is legal and operational now in only 7 US states.

Stop press from France:

For the first time, a European demonstration for GALGOS ESPAÑOLES  – Spanish Greyhounds – promoted by Asociación Francesa CREL www.crel.fr  in France.

This took place in Strasbourg on June 9 2012.

A march, with lots of  greyhounds,  started at the seat of the European Parliament and moved through the centre of Strasbourg, ending up back at the Parliament.

This is an  act of rejection of the abuse, abandonment, ill treatment and slaughter of thousands of galgos in Spain.

More than 50.000 greyhounds are killed each year in Spain and more than 100.000 abandoned.
