“I don’t like animal cruelty” is a phrase often heard – “and neither do we”, said Pam Ahern, Founder of Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary on Saturday at the Bundoora Farmers Market. Ably assisted by one adorably cute pig named Priscilla, Pam and her porcine companion kept market-goers enchanted and informed throughout the day.
Those in attendance were informed about some of the most egregious practices meted out to farmed animals and were aghast that many of the choices they made in their life actually supported animal cruelty. “Many people do not realise that the first time many farmed animals actually get to see the outside world, smell fresh air, or take more than a few steps, is on the last day of their lives, as they are trucked off to abattoirs” said Pam. “Moreover, the only reason animals live like this is because people buy the products of their suffering”.
Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary is situated in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range at Willowmavin, just outside of Kilmore. This not for profit sanctuary for rescued farmed animals can be seen out and about each weekend as they encourage people to expand their animal welfare concerns beyond cute kittens and cuddly puppies to include the millions of far less romanticised animals raised for food each year.
