Marc Bekoff

Marc Bekoff’s Ignoring Nature No More (University of Chicago Press, 2013)  is a  collection of diverse essays and is devoted to ‘compassionate conservation,’ a growing global movement that translates concerns about the well-being of individuals, species, populations, and ecosystems into action.

Written by leading scholars in a host of disciplines, the book amplifies Bekoff’s ethic of kindness that he has applied in the field of ethology, the study of animal behaviour.  The book is important in the Indian context since it highlights the fundamental duty of all Indian citizens as enunciated in Article 51(a) (g) of the Indian Constitution:

“It shall be the fundamental duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the Natural Environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife, and to have compassion for all living creatures.”
