On Sunday November 13th at noon, Senator Tony Avella and Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal, two New York State politicians who time and again have gone out on a limb for animals, are holding a press conference and rally on the steps of City Hall to demand an immediate ban on horse-drawn carriages.
They recently introduced a bill at the state level that would ban horse-drawn carriages in New York City. Their bill does not rely on the possible future production of a fleet of electric vintage cars for which a prototype doesn’t exist, and it circumvents Speaker Christine Quinn, who has single-handedly and undemocratically killed all local legislative efforts to take these horses out of harm’s way.

Advocates to Call for Ban on Horse Drawn Carriages
On Sunday, November 13th, 2011, at 12:00 PM Senator Tony Avella will be joined by Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal, City Council Member Danny Dromm, President of the Coalition to Ban Horse Drawn Carriages Elizabeth Forel, documentary filmmaker Donny Moss and dozens of animal rights advocates will rally on the City Hall Steps demanding that Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn finally end this dangerous industry especially in light of the recent rash of horse carriage accidents that have taken place in less than 2 weeks in New York City.
Recently, three heart-wrenching incidents involving carriage horses occurred within thirteen days of each other. The following incidents only serve to highlight the fact that this inhumane industry has carried on far past its expiration date and only endangers the lives of everyone around it:
10/23/2011: A Carriage Horse “Charlie” collapses and dies in front of Midtown North Police Precinct.
10/28/2011: A Carriage Horse “spooks” on Central Park South and runs east along Central Park South into park without driver and no passengers, and crashes overturning carriage, horse down.
11/4/2011: A Carriage Horse collapses on 60th and Broadway in the middle of the evening commute.
~ QCA has been supporting this campaign for some time now and we send our best wishes to Elizabeth Forel and the groups working so hard to protect the horses in NYC.
